A new prefabricated, factory-tested cable system is cutting contractor time on site at Heathrow Terminal 5.

Pirelli Cables’ new Flexo Modular Power is being used at Heathrow Terminal 5, helping cut on-site installation time. Specially designed for use in road or rail tunnels, the cabling eliminates the need to make complex electrical connections in high or dark positions.

R&M Construction Services installed the cabling at Heathrow. Its commercial director Graham Tyler commented: “Using Pirelli’s Flexo made the installation process much easier than using a conventional hard-wire system. Working to a critical timescale meant the pressure was on as the road had to be open and ready for traffic on a specific date. The whole system was pre-made by Pirelli and delivered complete on 16 cable drums. It was literally a case of just laying out the cable and plugging in the lights.”

The cable was delivered on drums containing a harness. This was unwound along the cable route and once the harness was supported on a tray, fixing the light fittings was by plug-and-play. This minimised site time on testing as well as installation.
