Leading the way was Oscar Faber who scooped the all-important prize of Building Service Best Practice after demonstrating its dedication to providing excellence in all areas of communication, with both clients and employees. This is achieved through an obvious respect for its staff and a willingness to provide excellence in customer service shown by the company's policy of offering 'post-project reviews'.
Major Project of the Year was awarded to Crown House Engineering following its achievements in the Portcullis House project. The judges were impressed by the design solutions the company offered which resulted in a high quality and innovative pre-fabrication project.
The highly topical prize of Environmental Initiative of the Year went to Connell Mott MacDonald who demonstrated what was described as the best application of sustainable design at the Ecos Centre in Ballymena. The eye-catching project makes extensive use of photovoltaic cells, solar connectors and a wind turbine that results in Ecos meeting 60% of its own energy requirements. GlaxoSmithKline received the Training Award as a result of its new hvac training centre. The facility is geared towards training staff on hvac technology in pharmaceutical situations. Offering what the judges believe to be a real example of how to encourage training in the industry the course covers all the major aspects of hvac systems. The company is also planning specialist courses.
The final word has to go to this year's Apprentice of the Year award Ryan Craggs. The 21 year old is employed by ABB Building Technologies in Tyne & Wear and beat hundreds of entrants to receive the prize-winning cheque for £500 and also £500 worth of specialist testing equipment.
Ryan showed an excellent understanding of installation and testing procedures together with a good knowledge of health and safety. Let's hope Ryan goes on to have a great career. Well done to all the winners!
