A corporate real estate firm in France has become the first building user of plastics optical fibre (POF) cabling.

Nexans installed the cabling in the headquarters of em2c in Lyon. The building has 3500 m2 of floor space, which will increase to 5500 m2 in 2008. It is designed as an open plan showroom, with meeting points to help customers visualise their projects with items such as 3D modelling.

The centralised local area network installed by Nexans uses 5 km of POF duplex cabling. It supports Fast and Gigabit Ethernet. The network can connect up to 80 users through fibre-to-the-desk, while catering for future demand in bandwidth. The active components are the same as for silica fibre and should need no future modification.
