The new energy minister Brian Wilson has announced the government plans to boost hydroelectricity generation in a bid to meet climate change targets.
The plans will be set underway with a £250 million refurbishment of Scottish and Southern's hydroelectric plant near Glasgow.

The government is hoping that 10% of the country's electricity generation will come from renewable sources by 2010. Mr Wilson explained: "This is a major signal that hydroelectric power has a huge part to play in the government's strategy for renewable energy.

"The government is expected to create a £1billion market for renewable energy by 2010. The main driver for this will be the renewable obligation, so it is crucial this mechanism encompasses hydroelectric power." Wilson also stated that electricity suppliers should buy a fixed proportion of their power needs from hydroelectric plants.
