Pointer security is looking to expand its provision of wireless security solutions following the accreditation of four of its engineers as wireless communications installers from Alvarion.

The training was put to good use when Pointer installed Alvarion Broadband Wireless Access solutions at several secure facilities across Scotland.

Tom McGinniss, Pointer's project manager, said: "Many of these sites are spread over three miles or more. The terrain would have been difficult and prohibitively expensive to cable in the conventional manner. The only effective solution was to use Alvarion's wireless technology to integrate surveillance cameras with the client's network infrastructure.

"Cost savings for the client were considerable. As the client was already using Alvarion wireless technology for its internal network we were confident we could extend its use, benefiting both installer and end user.

"The Alvarion technology is normally used to provide wireless internet access but we've taken a bold step for a security provider by using it to transmit IP-based video and telemetry over a local area network on a large scale. This equipment is considered leading-edge within the marketplace and can transmit over a 10km range. It also has one of the highest encryption technologies currently available."
