If we build over everything we’ll have nothing left to work with

Housing

Nick Boles talks about the “right to a home with a little bit of ground around it to bring your family up in” as a basic right (“We need to build homes on a third more land”, 28 November, www.building.co.uk).

“Basic rights” such as leaving room in the countryside to grow food and collect water to drink are always good. Build over everything and you have nothing left to work with. Of course you could always hope the rest of the world will sell us food and water at reasonable prices - that’s worked for the UK’s energy policy, hasn’t it?
