I agree with the recent views of Colin Harding and Chris Charles (Letters, 18 February, page 34) – small firms in the construction industry do need better representation.

However, how to achieve this is the problem. And do they deserve it at the end of the day?

In my experience, small firms have every right to complain about worthless or impractical interference from government and quangos, but are too apathetic to do anything about it. If they want better representation from their trade associations, why not get involved and make sure that it happens?

The other alternative is to start a new association. That has happened in the past.

Why not now?
