More than 600,000 Ibstock bricks were used for this monumental residential development close to the docklands of Amsterdam. Completed in September 2001, the building provides high quality living accommodation above retail and leisure facilities on the ground floor. The mechanically moulded bricks give a precise feel and are laid with raked joints.

The judges enjoyed this excellent example of modern Dutch architecture that sits beautifully on the waterside and represents a bold, confident use of brick. It is to be hoped that more brick buildings of this size might also materialise in the UK.
