A two-storey extra-care housing scheme comprising 49 self-contained apartments, Huntley House is the latest addition to Whiteley Village, built by William Whiteley in 1914 for housing frail, elderly people. In order to gain planning approval, the new building continues the attractive, Lutyens-style aesthetic of the surrounding, grade II-listed development. Michelmersh handmade 55 mm red facing bricks and Charnwood Forest handmade 55 mm grey facing bricks are complemented by flush mortar joints to provide a solid, traditional finish.

As a new addition, Huntley House fits perfectly into its mature environment and uses brickwork to exude a sense of strength, solidity and reassurance – qualities so vital for the residents. The judges admired the confident, beautifully crafted detailing throughout, particularly the flat and semi-circular arches above door and window openings. The neighbours will be pleased.
