John Brash JB-RED roofing battens were used on BRE’s refurbishment of a Victorian stable block at its Garston site near Watford

Called Rethinking Housing Refurbishment, the project is a trial of energy-saving products and technologies to see which are the most suitable for improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock. The roofing battens conform to code of practice for slating and tiling BS 5534 which means the battens don’t have to be graded onsite. The company says this saves time and wastage. The battens are stained red to demonstrate compliance with the standard. The stable block was re-roofed using a combination of new and old clay tiles.
