The best gig for me would be the Velodrome, not just because ISG are actually building this project, but also because the British are tipped to do well on track again in 2012, which should give the cycling world a high level of exposure. If we’re talking fantasy Olympic jobs though, anything to do with the technical production of the TV and radio broadcasts would be fascinating – working with both the technical teams and the commentary teams, and then meeting the star athletes would be a real adventure. I’m also into motorbike racing, but sadly that’s not yet an Olympic sport!

I’d love to work on the Aquatics Centre. Zaha Hadid’s design is impressive and will be drawing people to the site long after the Games finish. But if we’re really dreaming, I’d like to be a competitor in a sailing event. I used to compete at national level in Australia at dinghy sailing. My brother, Rohan Veal, has made a career of it and is now a world champion Moth Class dinghy racer. In 2007 he won the world championships at Lake Garda, Italy, with a perfect scorecard, which has never been achieved in that class before.

Sometimes it seems like the only work that is available at the moment is going on at the Olympics, it’s a little hive of activity. Unfortunately the only way we would get involved is with hard landscaping, but I get the feeling budgets are being squeezed on the Olympics. If I had to pick a venue to work on it would be the Aquatics Centre because I love swimming and Zaha Hadid’s design is amazing and the only real stand-out design on the site. I recently got to see her new interiors at the Home House private members’ club in London and was really impressed. She’s really pushing the boundaries.

We’re normally involved in renovating period properties, so working on the sailing facilities at Weymouth and Portland would be something totally different. It would be great to see some coast as I’m currently miles away from the sea and of course the UK did well in sailing in the last Olympics, so it would be good to be associated with success. On the main London Olympics site I’d like to work on the Athletes’ Village to see how the different schemes come together.
