Roger Madelin will advise mayor of London on urban design alongside Richard Rogers and Sunand Prasad

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has appointed one of the joint chief executives of Argent to advise him on design excellence in the UK capital.

Roger Madelin will join Lord Rogers – already a design adviser to the mayor – as well as RIBA president Sunand Prasad and English Heritage advisory committee chair Joyce Bridges on the five-person design advisory panel.

The panel, chaired by Simon Milton, deputy mayor for policy and planning, will advise on design strategies for the capital and act as a sounding board for high-profile or controversial construction projects. It will also act as a design champion for major London developments.

The Greater London Authority has also launched a competition to find several lesser-known industry figures to sit on a design advisory forum. The successful applicants will be drawn from the housing, urban design and engineering sectors.

Johnson said: “Great design has been the hallmark of our great city from our historic palaces and squares to our modern offices.

“However, in striving for design excellence we must ensure we have a constant supply of new ideas and fresh thinking and that is why these two new resources of experienced advisers and younger talent prepared to challenge traditional thinking will be invaluable to me and my teams as we evaluate new proposals and improve our capital's buildings and infrastructure.”

Both the design advisory panel and forum will be managed by Design for London, which now sits within the London Development Agency's design, development and environment division led by Peter Bishop.
