Firm now employs 17,500 people

Atkins has revealed it has cut its headcount by 1,000 since 30 September last year.

In a trading update in advance of results for the year to 31 March, the engineer said it had “continued to adjust resources” due to market conditions, and now employs17,500 people. Employment rose to 18,500 after the acquisition of US business PBSJ last October.

The headcount is 200 less than the company predicted in mid-February, when it said it would have 17,700 employees at the year end.

The group reported the UK was “challenging” but was doing better than expected in the Middle East due to rising activity and the recovery of payments from clients.
