Relief for staff following last year’s round of redundancies

Engineering consultant Atkins has signalled an end to job cuts at its UK business.

In a trading update to the city Atkins said it expected overall headcount to stabilise around current levels.

Last year the company reduced its workforce in the UK by 7% to its current number of 9,640.

At the time Atkins said it was forced into the move as a result of falling workloads.

The company also said that the UK trading environment remained difficult though last year’s business restructure helped to mitigate the effects.

In its statment covering the last four months, Atkins said: “Following significant restructuring last year, our highways and transportation business has begun the year well with increased visibility of demand for our services.

“We have seen a modest increase in activity in the letting of new commissions, extensions to current contracts and the use of existing and new frameworks.”
