The housebuilder will build the Gaunt Francis-designed home at the BRE's Innovation Park

Barratt is to build the latest zero carbon home at the BRE’s Innovation Park near Watford.

The Green House won a public vote in the Home of the Future competition sponsored by the Mail on Sunday.

The house, designed by architect Gaunt Francis, includes recycled slag foundations, lime render walls and pitched roofs of photovoltaic panels. Heating comprises energy-efficient appliances controlled by a central computer system.

Mark Clare, Barratt Developments chief executive, said: " It will combine outstanding design, the highest standards of energy efficiency and the use of innovative microgeneration."
