Georgian sructure was on Historic England’s at risk register

A plan to restore a 200-year-old gasholder as part of a wider residential scheme Berkeley is building in Fulham has been given the green light.

Called Gasholder No 2, the structure dates back to 1829 and is the only surviving cast-iron tripod gasholder of its kind.

The structure was on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register but it will now be restored in time for tis 200th anniversary.

The gasholder was built between 1829 and 1830

Local council Hammersmith & Fulham gave the scheme to repurpose the gasholder the thumbs-up with Berkeley saying it will be “restored and re-erected as the park’s centrepiece, creating a new public landmark where people can experience the engineering up close for the first time”.

Those working on the plan include heritage architect ADAM Architecture, heritage consultant Montagu Evans, structural engineer Craddys and landscape architect Gillespies.

Berkeley subsidiary St William said it will sit at the centre of its King’s Road Park scheme, a 16 acre regeneration of the former Fulham gasworks which includes around 1,800 homes.

King’s Road Park is one of the largest regeneration projects in central London and has been masterplanned by EPR Architects.

Foster & Partners has drawn up the latest phase of the work – 357 homes in towers of 28 and 38 storeys sharing a seven-storey podium building.

The fourth phase is the only part of the scheme to include towers of substantial height and saw one tower cut from the proposals due to fire safety requirements in residential buildings above 18m.

The wider project team includes planning consultant Lichfields, Gillespies, environmental consultant Buro Happold, MEP consultant WSP, facade engineer Wintech, daylight and sunlight consultant GIA and wind consultant Urban Microclimate.
