Winner: Arup

Arup’s victory in this category is testament to the fact that it has really got a grip on sustainability. The firm makes all the right moves – it monitors its carbon footprint, sends out sustainability statements to stakeholders, has introduced a green procurement plan and set ambitious recycling targets. Most of its UK offices have ISO 14001 certification. The firm’s international approach is suitably flexible, with policy tailored to the individual characteristics of its four global regions – Europe, Americas, East Asia and Australasia. And it is associated with many of the most cutting-edge projects, such as the Kingspan Lighthouse at the BRE’s Innovation Park, which meets level six of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Arup has long been at the forefront of the eco agenda, but recent work shows it is anything but complacent.
