Buildings destroyed or looted in London and other major UK cities

A major cleanup operation has begun across London after some of the worst rioting in the capital for at least 20 years.

Unrest and looting took place across the London boroughs of Hackney, Croydon, Peckham, Lewisham, Clapham and Ealing.

Major fires also gripped hold of shops in Croydon and a retail warehouse in Enfield overnight.

Disturbances also spread for the first time outside of London, with riots reported in Birmingham and Liverpool.

Construction firms including demolition contractors and fit-out contractors are being enlisted to help with the cleanup.

Demolition contractors moved in last night to pull down a large carpet shop in Tottenham at the centre of rioting on Saturday which was badly damaged by a blaze.

The tram in south London was suspended between five stations (East Croydon to Wandle Park) this morning because of damage to overhead cables.
