New Local Government Network says council tax rebates and more relaxed planning laws would encourage take up of microgeneration

Council tax payers should be offered a rebate for installing green technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels, says a new report.

A more relaxed planning regime should also be used to incentivise householders, says the New Low Government Network report, Finding the Energy.

A NLGN spokesperson said: "There can be national minimum standards but if a town wants to go further in microgeneration, it should be allowed to do so."

The report says that local councillors should be able to consult local residents about the installation of domestic renewable techonologies.

It also suggests that councils offer interest-free loans towards installation costs.
