George Wimpey UK, Persimmon Homes and Barratt Homes will team up to build 70 ha urban development in Lawley, Telford, after winning contract from English Partnerships.

Three developers will team up to build a new community over 70 hectares in Lawley, Telford, after winning a £500m contract from English Partnerships.

The agency’s chairman Margaret Ford announced the joint bid from George Wimpey UK, Persimmon Homes and Barratt Homes had been successful at the English Partnerships annual meeting on 5 October.

“Lawley will be one of Britain’s most significant and exciting urban developments,” she said. “The winning developers have shown they have the vision and ambition to make sure this project reaches its full potential.”

The Lawley scheme will see 3,300 new homes built on brownfield or previously developed lands, along with schools, offices, shops, bars and restaurants. A quarter of the planned houses are affordable.

The work is due to start in mid-2006 and will account for about a fifth of new homes that Telford needs over the next decade.
