Office scheme set to be built by Multiplex will replace former HQ building

Erith has been appointed piling and concrete contractor on a scheme to turn a 1990s building on Old Street roundabout into a 35-storey office tower.

Developer Endurance Land, which is part of Hong Kong-based Nan Fung Group, said Erith will also carry out demolition work of the existing building at 99 City Road with previous occupier Inmarsat, a satellite telecommunications firm, having moved to a new head office at 50 Finsbury Square which was refurbished by Mace.

Erith is due to start work in earnest this summer with the scheme seeing 470,000 sq ft of office space built ahead of completion which is set for the first half of 2029.

The tower will use the existing Inmarsat Building as a podium and is expected to be completed in 2029

Multiplex has been on a PCSA for the job, which has a price tag of around £300m, since last summer with others working on the project including structural engineer AKT II, Atelier Ten on MEP, Publica on public realm design, planning consultant DP9, townscape consultant Montagu Evans, Sweco on vertical transport, project manager Third London Wall and cost consultant Arcadis.

The scheme would also include a 3,000 sq ft triple height space on the ground floor, which would be open to the street during the summer months

Designed by KPF, the new tower aims to revive the area’s struggling tech cluster, known as the Silicon Roundabout.

A number of high-profile firms have left the area in recent years to set up bases in other parts of the capital, including Google, which closed its seven-storey Campus startup hub three years ago.

The job was given planning by local authority Islington council in September 2023.
