Flight fantastic: British architect Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners and engineer Arup have designed a sustainable terminal at Zurich airport, along with two local design practices, Itten & Brechbühl and Ernst Basler & Partner. The 50,000 m2 Airside Centre, now under construction, will make use of solar gain and natural light to reduce the energy consumption of the airport to 1995 levels. The 220 m passenger hall is set below a double-curved roof and contains a timber-clad enclosure housing shops, restaurant and a lounge.
