A former chairman of Arup and the chief executive of Allied London are among 14 new honorary fellows of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Sir Duncan Michael, who has worked for Arup since 1962 and is now a trustee of the Arup Foundation, has joined the list of non-architect fellows rewarded for their contributions to architecture.

Michael Ingall, whose firm is behind the Spinningfields development in Manchester, was also named alongside such figures as the writer Peter Ackroyd, the architectural critic Stephen Bayley and sustainability guru Sir Jonathan Porritt.

Other honorary fellows include:

  • Loren Butt – mechanical engineer and former partner of Foster Associates
  • Professor David Fisk - Chair at Imperial College in Engineering for Sustainable Development
  • Doreen Lawrence – founder and director, the Stephen Lawrence Trust
  • Laura Lee – chief executive, Maggie’s Centres
  • Sir Jonathon Porritt – sustainability lobbyist and former chair of the Green Party
  • Allain Provost - landscape architect of Parc Andre Citroen in Paris
  • Andrew Scoones – director of the Building Centre Trust
  • Richard Sennett – writer and academic
  • James Turrell – artist and sculptor
  • Madelon Vriesendorp – artist and co-founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture
