Italian starchitect could have chance to build first UK building if successful

IItalian architect Massimiliano Fuksas could finally be given the chance to build in the UK after being shortlisted to design the Bishop Edward King Chapel in Oxfordshire.

Fuksas, who was last shortlisted in the UK in 2005 for the 2012 Aquatics Centre, is now competing with five other practices including Sarah Hare Architects, Niall McLaughlin Architects, Terry Pawson Architects and Ushida Findlay Architects to design a college chapel in Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire. The six were selected from over 100 others who applied for the job.

The new chapel will be built as part of a major programme of expansion and consolidation of its buildings to meet the needs of contemporary ministerial formation and Christian education.

The Canon Martyn Percy, principal of Cuddesdon, said: “Our hope is for a chapel that will help shape the future of ordination training, inspiring and illuminating a fresh generation of ordinands as they prepare for ministry in the 21st century.”

The shortlisted practices now have two months to work up concept designs for the new chapel. The winner will be announced in September this year.
