The Millau viaduct in the Aveyron region of southern France was officially opened this week by French president Jacques Chirac.

Designed by Foster and Partners, the viaduct is the highest in the world at 270 m, and spans 2500 m across the Tarn gorge. It is supported by seven concrete piers, and has transparent sidescreens designed to shelter vehicles from high winds. The client on the project was the French Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Housing, Tourism and Sea, engineer was Michel Virlogeux, structural engineer was EEG and design, build and operate contractor was CEVM.
