The government has allocated £1.4bn on improving and maintaining schools and their facilities in the 2019-20 financial year.

A fund for upgrades has been allocated £433m and will cover more than 1,400 projects across 1,200 small and stand-alone academy trusts and sixth-form colleges.

A separate improvement fund for local authorities and large academy chains, which each preside over several schools, will be allocated £800m.

And a fund allocated for small capital projects at schools has been handed £200m.

The money comes as the Department for Education prepares to enter a new phase of school building, with the publication of a new £2bn-3bn framework with a focus on the use of modern methods of construction.
