Diller Scofidio & Renfro follows up Milan win with Madrid coup

Heatherwick Studio has been pipped again by Diller Scofidio & Renfro to another high-profile commission in a major European city.

The US firm will draw up plans to overhaul Madrid’s AZCA area, the financial district of the Spanish capital.

The scheme is intended to put pedestrians at the centre of the revamp with new public spaces, walking routes and a series of trellis structures designed to reduce the visual impact of cars.

Heatherwick was among the also-rans in the competition to redevelop a tower in the middle of Milan won by Diller Scofidio & Renfro.

Others to miss out included David Chipperfield Architects and 3XN.
