Michael Gove stops 715 school building projects in major blow to sector

The government has confirmed that it is to cancel hundreds of school building projects, in a major blow to the industry.

Education secretary Michael Gove has announced that 715 school revamps planned under the Building Schools for the Future programme will not go ahead. Around £7.5bn will be cut from the school building programme over a five year period.

Any BSF scheme which has reached financial close will be allowed to proceed. For those at preferred bidder stage or just before – known as close of dialogue – sample schemes will be considered for progression but are not guaranteed. This means the picture is worse than under original plans, which would have seen the majority of schemes at preferred bidder go through.
