Workplace health and safety specialist will take over from Sir Bill Callaghan from 1 October 2007

Judith Hackitt CBE is set to succeed Sir Bill Callaghan as chair of the Health and Safety Commission from 1st October 2007.

Awarded a CBE in June 2006 in recognition for her work in the employment health and safety sector, Ms Hackitt’s new role comes with a five year term, set to begin after she returns from assignment in Brussels as director of the Chemistry for Europe project.

Sir Callaghan, welcoming Hackitt to the role, said: “Her previous role as a Commissioner and her considerable experience in the chemical industry makes her well placed for the responsibility of taking forward the HSC's strategy for making health and safety a cornerstone of our society, achieving a record for workplace health and safety that leads the world and seeing through the merger of the HSC and HSE."
