Work involves refurbishing listed gasholder that will be home to more than 200 apartments

Keltbray has been appointed to carry out remediation work at a housing scheme being built in the shadow of the Oval cricket ground in south London.

Berkeley is building 1,300 homes at a scheme called Oval Village which is going up a site on Kennington Lane previously occupied by three gasholders.

New homes will be built inside the retained gasholder

Keltbray is refurbishing the grade II-listed Gasholder No 1 with the other two structures being dismantled and displayed as public art around the 2ha site.

More than 200 homes are due to be built inside the gasholder under a plan drawn up by Grid Architects

Other work being carried out by Keltbray includes bulk excavation with work due to finish the end of this year. The entire scheme is set to wrap up in 2024.

The gasholders were built over a period of two years in the late 1870s.
