10 Dock in Plymouth used by UK’s nuclear fleet

A joint venture between Kier and Bam has been confirmed to upgrade a facility in Plymouth used by the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet.

The £600m contract has been awarded by Babcock on behalf of the MoD’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise.

Works at 10 Dock in Devonport include major civil infrastructure, including a water retaining boundary structure and nuclear licensed components, alongside extensive engineering works.

The joint venture was first picked for the job in 2022 with a JV between Costain and Mott MacDonald also carrying out a delivery partner role on the job.

Babcock is masterminding the work through its Major Nuclear Capital Programmes business unit at their Devonport facility with the job designed to improve Devonport’s capability to support the maintenance and availability of current and future submarine fleets.

Phil Brown, managing director for Major Nuclear Capital Programmes at Babcock, said: “This contract award marks a major milestone for the 10 Dock programme and the beginning of the next phase of delivery.

“10 Dock will provide critical infrastructure that enables deep maintenance of the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, helping to ensure the UK retains the capability, capacity and readiness required to meet future defence needs.”
