Fimr already working for same client on Paddington overstation scheme

Mace is expected to start construction later this year on a £200m deal to build a student housing scheme above Southwark tube station in London.

The AHMM-designed project will see a 15-storey building built on top of the station which was opened in 1999 and given a grade II listing last year.

The block will include 429 student flats while an adjacent 14-storey council housing block will include 44 homes for Southwark council.

The job above Southwark station is set to complete in 2029

In an update on Friday, the developer and Transport for London’s property company, Places for London, said they had exchanged contracts on the sale of student accommodation to “a vehicle wholly owned by Places for London”.

Completion is targeted for 2029, in time for the start of the 2029/30 academic year.

The pair said they were targeting gateway 2 approval for the second half of this year.

Mace is already working with Helical and Places for London on a £220m office block above Paddington station.

The firm won the Paddington Overstation Development, located by Grand Union Canal and close to the Elizabeth line station, last summer.

The scheme has been designed by Grimshaw and will feature 15 floors of office cross an entire building running up to 19 storeys. The office space will run across 235,000sq ft.

Helical was appointed preferred developer by Places for London to work on new schemes planned above underground stations in the capital three years ago.
