Chris McDonald succeeds Sarah Jones

Chris McDonald has been appointed construction minister.

He succeeds Sarah Jones who has been moved to the Home Office as a junior minister in a reshuffle triggered by Angela Rayner’s resignation.

According to the Department for Business and Trade, McDonald’s brief will also include a host of other areas including steel, automotive and maritime and shipbuilding.

His brief also covers the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and includes green jobs and skills.

Before entering Parliament last year, the Stockton North MP spent 20 years working in the steel industry, with a focus on research. In 2014 he led the divestment of the Materials Processing Institute from Tata Steel UK, becoming CEO.

He is also a Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Earlier this week, Samantha Dixon was appointed building safety minister in the reshuffle.

Previous safety minister Alex Norris has been moved to minister of state for border security and asylum in the Home Office.
