Five construction companies have signed global agreements with internet firm Nortel Networks.
Under the deal, Amec, Bovis Lend Lease, Fluor Corporation, Skanska, and ABB will install wireless, fibre-optic and data networks for Nortel Networks.

Chahram Bolouri, president of global operations for the client, said it had used local firms but intended now to employ global companies.

He said: "With their financial strength and world-class innovative practices, we can confidently bring these companies to the customer." Amec will form a strategic alliance to design and provide infrastructure for communication systems and equipment centres.

Peter Mason, chief executive of Amec, said the deal was important for the firm and its French partner SPIE.
