Wider economy contracted with Iran war blamed for fall

Construction output edged up just 0.1% in April although growth during the three months to April was up by 1.6%, according to official figures.

Both repair and maintenance, and new work, grew over the three month period, increasing by 3.4% and 0.3%, respectively. In new work, the largest positive contributor was private commercial new work, which grew by 2.1%.

The Office for National Statistics said that the growth in monthly output in April came solely from an increase in repair and maintenance, which grew by 0.6%. New work fell by 0.3%.

The wider economy contracted by 0.1% in April with some firms citing the conflict in the Middle East as having raised costs and affected turnover.

In the three months to April, the economy grew by 0.7% compared to the previous three month period.
