Leyton Orient FC has announced the appointment of Populous to lead the design of a new “world-class” stadium.

The east London club, currently at position 13 in EFL League One, said the redevelopment will support its vision to become a club that can compete ”sustainably” in the Championship.

The appointment of Populous comes two months after the club announced a partnership with the London borough of Waltham Forest to create a new home for the club, which has been based at its 9,200-seater home ground at Brisbane Road since 1937.

Leyton Orient said it is continuing to work with the council to find a suitable site for the project, which it said will also include retail, hospitality and leisure facilities.

The club’s majority shareholder David Gandler said appointing Populous is a “clear statement of our ambition”.

“We’re building a world-class, multi-sport campus that honours Leyton Orient’s heritage while creating a vibrant, affordable, technology-driven destination for our fans and our community. This will be a home that inspires not just for today, but for generations,” Gandler said.

Populous senior principal and global director Declan Sharkey added:  “We are honoured to partner with Leyton Orient at such a defining moment in their journey.

“Our vision is to design a unique stadium and mixed-use development that celebrates the club’s heritage while embracing the future, blending world-class sporting architecture and digital innovation with a vibrant, community-driven neighbourhood.

“Together, we will create a new landmark for east London and beyond.”

The club said it now plans to start the scheme’s feasibility and master planning phase and will present emerging designs at a series of consultation events with supporters and locals over the coming months.

Populous’ other stadium projects in the UK include its upgrade for Wrexham stadium and a £650m overhaul of Twickenham stadium.
