Demand for young staff is forcing up wages in the consultancy sector, according to the annual salary survey from recruitment firm Hays Construction and Property.

Architects fresh out of university enjoyed pay rises of nearly 9%, and new building surveyors and assistant QSs are getting 7% more than last year.

Technologists, interiors designers and landscape architects all enjoyed increases around the 7% mark.

There were healthy above-inflation rises for almost all consultants – the only ones to lose out were partners or directors of architectural firms with 2.6% and junior water engineers with 2.8%.

The biggest increases were for CAD technicians. Those with three years’ experience are taking home almost 10% more.
