Welsh Water selects six contractors including Costain and Amec as preferred partners in a 15-year deal.

Welsh Water has chosen six contractors as preferred partners for a 15 year deal to upgrade its water network.

The preferred partners for the contract worth £300 million a year are Amec, Black & Veatch, Costain, Laing Utilities, Meica Process and Morrison Construction.

Under the £4.5 billion plan, Amec will be responsible for civils work in the south east Wales region; Black & Veatch for water processing; Costain for north Wales; Laing Utilities for mains rehabilitation; Meica Process for wastewater processes; and Morrison Construction for civil construction in south west Wales.

The selection as preferred partner follows an extensive tendering process by Welsh Water including detailed analysis, site visits, interviews, qualitative assessment and reviews.

Stuart Doughty, Costain group chief executive said: 'This is another excellent result. This announcement follows our recent successes with Thames Water and Yorkshire Water and further strengthens our leading position in the UK Water sector. He added that he would continue negotiations for securing further frameworks with a number of the water utilities clients in due course.

Work is due to start in April next year. The contracts will run for up to 10 years with five year performance reviews
