A new state-of-the-art heart and lung facility at the Royal Papworth hospital in Cambridgeshire officially opened yesterday.

The 310-bed £200m scheme on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus has been designed by HOK’s London studio and was built by Skanska.

Developed for the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the hospital has been designed to reduce stress and anxiety for patients and their families.

It includes dedicated lifts for relatives visiting patients in critical care and a specialist air-filtering system in the hospital’s cystic fibrosis department to minimise the spread of airborne infections.

See next week’s Building for a full review of the project.
