Mixed-use proposal by Squire & Partners includes co-living homes, hotel, performance venues and entertainment space
Squire & Partners has unveiled plans to build three towers on the former site of the abandoned Stratford Sphere project as part of a 2,100-home mixed-use scheme.
The practice is working for developer Hallmark on the Stratford Junction scheme on proposals put out to consultation last week for the triangular site between Stratford Station and Stratford International.
The 2ha site has remained vacant since being used for coach parking during the 2012 London Olympics with plans by US entertainment firm MSG to build a smaller version of its Las Vegas Sphere on the land scrapped in 2024 following months of planning wrangles.
The Populous-designed scheme would have seen the construction of a 21,500-seat spherical entertainment venue entirely covered in LED screens but was rejected by Sadiq Khan before the decision was called in by then-communities secretary Michael Gove.
MSG eventually pulled the project after criticising the planning row between Gove and Khan as having reduced the scheme to a “political football”.
The site has now been acquired by Hallmark with the developer planning to build three towers ranging in height between 31 and 47 storeys, containing 2,100 shared living homes and 1,600 hotel rooms.
The scheme would also include two performance venues with capacities ranging between 1,200 and 4,300 seats, 20,000sq m of immersive entertainment spaces and a 1,700sq m public plaza.
A full planning application is due to be submitted this autumn with construction expected to start in 2028.
Plans have already been submitted for meanwhile uses on the site including an events pavilion, food trucks, bric-a-brac market and a sports and recreation space.
