Action follows Unite’s move to ballot 6,000 electrical workers

The construction industry was hit with the threat of more strike action today, after union Ucatt announced it is balloting 500 public sector employers over pensions.

The move comes just two days after Unite announced it is balloting up to 6,000 electrical workers for strike action over the ongoing bitter dispute over changes to their pay and conditions.

Ucatt said it will ballot its members in local government, the NHS and the Civil Service.

The strike is planned for 30 November, in conjunction with other strikes planned by major public sector unions including Unison.

George Guy, acting general secretary of Ucatt, said: “Public sector workers are being hit by a triple whammy on their pensions by the Government.

“They are being told they will have to pay more, for a lower pension and they will have to work longer to receive it.

“This is totally unfair especially at a time when most workers have already had their pay frozen and inflation is rocketing.”
