Eastern European fit-out workers on Heathrow Terminal 5 are being prevented from receiving their entitlement of travel and accommodation benefits, unions have claimed.

Union representatives have met with fit-out contractor TCL over claims that its workforce, of which about 90% is from Poland or Lithuania, is not being given lodging and travel allowances set out in the Construction Industry Joint Council agreement in place on the site.

Alan Brkljac, T&G regional organiser, said: “We have issued a grievance against TCL because of a problem with their price agreement.”

Meanwhile, construction union UCATT this week broke away from the T&G and GMB unions by failing to back strike action by civil engineering workers on T5.

M&E contractor MJN Colston has taken over plumbing work on Wembley stadium after contractor SGD Engineering went into administration last week. SGD’s administrators are believed to be on the verge of selling the company’s remaining contracts to a new company, SGD Building Services.
