London is to get its first Zaha Hadid building after her firm beat Foreign Office Architects and Dutch practice MVRDV in the competition to design a home for the Architecture Centre.

The building, which is to be located beside the Tate Modern on London’s South Bank, will consist of a solid concrete ribbon wrapped around a full-height glazed space. “It is a powerful, not say unmissable building, but one that also allows quieter and more intimate spaces,” said Architecture Foundation director Rowan Moore. When it is completed next year, the £2.25m centre will house exhibition and events. It is to be developed by Land Securities.
