The Specialist Engineering Contractors (SEC) Group has welcomed the government’s backing for the appointment of a chief construction officer.

The appointment was recommended by the House of Commons Business and Enterprise Select Committee in its report on the construction industry.

SEC president Lord O’Neill of Clackmannan said: “We are delighted that this matter is now being progressed through the proposed appointments of a chief construction officer”.

O’Neill said that whoever took up the role should be alive to the needs and concerns of small businesses and must have “substantial industry or business experience and sufficient status to carry weight in the corridors of power”.
