Construction struggles in third quarter but the economy overall posts unexpected growth

Construction output fell 1.4% in the third quarter, in the first official ONS figures since the Brexit vote.

The drop comes after a marginall 0.1% fall in the second quarter. Output was also down 0.2% on last year.

But the economy overall grew by 0.5%, beating economists’ predictions, powered by strong growth in the UK’s powerhouse services sector.
