Big name consultants and architects, including HOK, CH2M Hill and Aecom, are jostling for a key role on the £720m refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster.

Last month, parliament’s estate arm said it was seeking expressions of interest from firms to evaluate ways to bring the structure and facilities at the Houses of Parliament up to modern standards and prevent irreversible damage to the grade I-listed building.

The procurement exercise for firms to conduct a feasibility study into the £720m work programme is under way, with pre-qualification questionnaires submitted last week.

Building understands that teams in the running include architect HOK with consultants Deloitte and Aecom; architect HLM with consultants CH2M Hill and Parsons Brinckerhoff; a third team led by consultant EC Harris and a fourth consortium led by consultant Gardiner & Theobald.

There are expected to be in excess of 10 teams competing for the job, with a shortlist to be drawn up over the summer.
