Architects to collaborate in creation of “iconic” building to house King's College London's new clinical neuroscience institute
Devereux Architects and Allies & Morrison have been appointed to design a new £41m clinical research facility for King's College London (KCL).
The college requires an “iconic” and sustainable building on its Denmark Hill site in south-east London to house the new King's Clinical Neuroscience Institute.
The two UK architecture firms previously collaborated to design a clinical research building for the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery in central London.
Devereux Architects has also been involved in several previous projects at KCL's Denmark Hill campus, including three other new-build research facilities.
KCL is developing a masterplan for the wider Denmark Hill campus, which it shares with King's College Hospital and Maudsley Hospital.
Many of the researchers to be based at the new institute also work as clinicians in the hospitals, and a key aim of the institute will be to create greater links between biomedical research and clinical medicine.
The facility will focus on research into neuroscience, including neurogenetics, epilepsy, neurodegeration such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, stroke and head injury.
The new building is scheduled for completion by December 2010.
