Some of us may remember the Royal Fine Art Commission (RFAC). It was about as effective as Cabe, though having to work more through the community

It had 18 unpaid commissioners, a staff of eight, a couple of rooms and a budget of about £700,000.

I’m not sure I agree with Roger Madelin (12 November, page 31) that we need Cabe; the RFAC remains an attractive alternative.
