The wife of a site worker required to continue throughout the coronavirus pandemic tells her story

My husband is not in a post where he really needs to work. He does cosmetic repairs on houses for a subcontractor, but he says that if he doesn’t work he won’t be able to get any money when the time comes, as the government has stated that construction should stay open.

He’s working today. When he came home yesterday he said his boss was closing the office and that the admin staff had already gone.

But he said that, if my husband still wants to work, he would pay him overtime – which I think is terrible.  He clearly has no care for his staff and their safety.

I’m at risk with asthma and a heart condition, so this working situation worries me greatly.

They have no areas to wash their hands or sterile products to use. He takes anti-bac sprays with him and then takes his uniform off when he gets through the door and puts it straight into the washing machine.

I’m at risk with asthma and a heart condition, so this working situation worries me greatly.

His boss told him that he cannot pay him now and he must contact the necessary department to find out about being paid, however that’s not the case is it?

The employer is given 80% by the government and has an option to top up – which clearly he’s not going to do. I just wish his employer cared about his staff.

My husband has never been off sick in 32 years of marriage and he is very loyal but I have struggled with this situation and I know there are many others like us.
