A reader’s view on John Lewis’ idea to pay subcontractors directly

Retail

In response to the article John Lewis considers direct payment for subcontractors (15 March, page 9) - it will only work for companies as big and forever expanding as John Lewis that are able to see a profit in doing something like this. They can invest in these kind of risky ideas and should this prove effective, the rest will follow.

As for main contractors, they have brought this upon themselves. Although most can be fair when it comes to payment there will always be those select few that profit from subcontractors going bust, longer programmes and the endless money that is to be made from big companies like John Lewis.
